He is unusual in the interior design world in that he is not limited to just one style. The flexibility of his design ethic is reflected in the featured projects that include a Victorian house, an Art Deco apartment and a tropical hideaway.

Design in the Hamptons

Design in the Hamptons

By Anthony Iannacci
Published by Monacelli Press, RRP £60
To order Design in the Hamptons please visit GDC interiors Book Collection powered by Amazon

The immensely charming group of villages on the far end of Long Island has always had an enduring appeal with their charming seaside houses and village life. This is where stressed out millionaires have traditionally sought and found rest and relaxation, like modern day metropolitan Marie Antoinettes, play-acting at a bucolic cottage lifestyle, with all the mod cons and styling that money can buy. In fact the Hamptons has some of the highest real estate values in the whole of the US, and many leading American designers – some of whom are featured in this book – have created a level of style and luxury rarely concentrated in such a small area. The architecture, interiors and gardens of 19 houses are featured in designs by Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan, John Barman, Fox-Nahem, Thad Hayes, Tony Ingrao, Todd Merrill, Roman & Williams, and Joe d’Urso.

Rembrandt The Late Works

Rembrandt The Late Works

By Jonathan Bikker and Gregor J.M. Weber
Published by Yale University Press, RRP £33.72
To order Rembrandt: The Late Works please visit GDC interiors Book Collection powered by Amazon

Rembrandt clearly saved the best for last. He may, by the end have been down (his wife and son dead, bankruptcy, litigation and ill health) but he was definitely not out. Between 1650 and his death in 1669 at the age of 63, he produced the work that defines Rembrandt as the Great Master of the Golden Age, a dazzling period of experimentation and depth in both technique and subject matter. Exceptional works that cling to the memory like The Jewish Bride, his Self Portrait with Two Circles and the monumental Conspiracy of Claudius Civilis – surely the first expressionist painting.
This book that accompanies the excellent exhibition on Rembrandt’s late work at the National Gallery, is part of this major reappraisal of his later years and demonstrates that Rembrandt was cut from a more heroic cloth than most.

Alidad The Timeless Home

Alidad The Timeless Home

By Sarah Stewart-Smith and photographs by James McDonald
Published by Rizzoli, RRP £34.73
To order Alidad: The Timeless Home please visit GDC interiors Book Collection powered by Amazon

This long awaited book on the designs of Alidad graphically demonstrates the evolution of Turquerie (although as a Persian he may take issue with that!) in the Western tradition – that enduring fascination in Europe for the rich exoticism for the near orient. An ambivalent enchantment that was usually accompanied with fear and trepidation, and embraced the arts, architecture, music and fashion. Alidad’s masterful creations bridge gaps between cultures and time, harmonising the formerly (and all too sadly currently) antagonistic. His virtuoso styling is as unmistakably distinctive as it is rich and this book is a beautiful window on his art.
